If you already hold a valid IPMA® or GPM certificate and are aiming for the next higher level, this is referred to as an upgrade certification. Within IPMA® project management certifications, this includes the following progression paths: Basic Level to Level D; Level D to Level C, and Level C to Level B.
Compared to an initial certification, an upgrade certification offers reduced examination fees and shortened examination procedures — provided that your certificate for the previous level is still valid at the time of registration (5 years from the date of issue). Your advantage: for example, if you already hold the Basic Certificate in project management, one examination component is waived when upgrading to the next higher IPMA® Level D certification. The only exception is the highest IPMA® Level A, which is always treated as an initial certification.
