Certification for experienced project managers

IPMA® Level B – Competent for complexity. For experienced project leaders.

IPMA Level B requires leadership experience in complex projects, programmes, or portfolios. Participants in this certification are capable of initiating, planning, managing, and successfully completing complex projects.
As part of the certification process, you demonstrate that you are able to lead large project teams to success, even in challenging environments. You are capable of contributing to the strategic development of organizations through projects. After successfully passing the examination, certified individuals may use one of the following titles, depending on their specialization: IPMA® Level B – Certified Senior Project Manager, IPMA® Level B – Certified Senior Programme Manager, or IPMA® Level B – Certified Senior Portfolio Manager

Certification at Level B requires experience in a complex project environment.
Within the last 8 years, you must have gained at least five years of experience as a project manager, including at least three years in a responsible leadership role managing complex projects.

Examples of typical leadership roles include:

Senior project or programme manager
Head of PMO, Head of Project Portfolio Management
Project control management (facilities, investments)
Construction management (in accordance with German state building regulations "Landesbauordnung LBO")
Technical project management, commercial project management
Overall project management
Management of large project offices
Senior consultant in project, programme, and/or portfolio management

According to this framework, complexity is divided into the following three areas:

Indicators relating to technical competencies
Indicators relating to context
Indicators relating to management and leadership

You routinely apply project, programme, or portfolio management in complex environments.
You know how to implement strategies through projects.
You demonstrate leadership skills in projects.
You are proficient in agile, traditional, and hybrid project management approaches.

Registration for the certification examination via PM-ZERT's certification portal. English-language examinations are also available upon request.

Written exam lasting 180 minutes
Workshop lasting 6 hours
Interview of up to 90 minutes
If you already hold an IPMA® Level C certificate, the workshop is waived as an examination part. Instead, an extended interview of up to 120 minutes will take place.
Certificate issued: Depending on your specialization, you will receive one of the following titles: IPMA® Level B – Certified Senior Project Manager, IPMA® Level B – Certified Senior Programme Manager, or IPMA® Level B – Certified Senior Portfolio Manager. The certificate is issued in English.
